The BMW X5 is one of the most well-known midsize luxury SUVs you can buy. Produced by German luxury automaker BMW, it has gained a reputation for its tech features, spacious interior, and signature BMW driving experience. For 2024, the X5 receives a facelift. This includes refreshed interior and exterior styling and an updated infotainment system. However, there are plenty of well-equipped, value-packed contenders to consider. Interior Comparison

Even though these two models are midsize luxury SUVs, they have different interior seating configurations. BMW endows the 2024 X5 with a roomy five-seat, two-row configuration. This provides excellent comfort for front and rear-seat occupants. Standard interior features for the 2024 X5 range include a power-adjustable steering column, dual-zone climate control, and a panoramic sunroof.

Meanwhile, the 2024 Volvo XC90 comes with six or seven seats, depending on the trim, spread across three rows. However, this results in less second-row legroom. The third row is only suitable for children. It also offers dual-zone climate control and powered front seats. But the interior doesn’t feel as comfortable as the 2024 X5, particularly for taller and well-built adults.

The 2024 X5’s two-row configuration enables it to offer up to 34 cubic feet of cargo capacity. Meanwhile, the 2024 XC90 can only accommodate 11 cubic feet of cargo when the third row is in use. If you need more space, you have to fold it. Plus, the 2024 X5 offers more interior storage space, particularly with its large glovebox and center console storage bin. Front and rear passengers also receive cup holders and USB charging ports. Higher trims have color-adjustable ambient interior lighting, too.

The 2024 X5’s infotainment system uses BMW’s latest iDrive 8.5 system software. It is controlled via a console-mounted iDrive controller, as well as the car’s 14.9-inch touchscreen. Meanwhile, the 2024 Volvo XC90 only comes with a nine-inch touchscreen. Both vehicles include Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ connectivity. They’ve also got Bluetooth® connectivity. Furthermore, the 2024 X5 has a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, a wireless phone charger, and a 5G Wi-Fi hotspot for all trims. A Bowers & Wilkins premium sound system upgrade is also available.

Performance Comparison

BMW offers two powertrains for the 2024 X5 range. The entry-level sDrive40i powertrain uses a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine. For 2024, this engine gets a power increase to 375 horsepower. It is paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox and drives the rear wheels. Selecting the xDrive40i variant retains the same engine and gearbox but adds BMW’s xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive system. For buyers who want more power, BMW offers the M60i trim. This gets a 4.4-liter turbocharged V8 engine with 523 horsepower. An eight-speed automatic gearbox and xDrive all-wheel drive system are standard.

The 2024 Volvo XC90 comes with two powertrains. The B5 variant uses a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder turbocharged engine with 247 horsepower. The B6 gets the same engine with 295 horsepower. An eight-speed automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive are standard.

BMW also offers a plug-in hybrid variant of the 2024 X5 called the xDrive50e. This variant provides 483 horsepower and 40 miles of all-electric range. Meanwhile, Volvo's 2024 XC90 T8 plug-in hybrid produces 407 horsepower.

Safety Features Comparison

The 2024 BMW X5 comes with automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, and lane departure warning. Lane-keeping assistance, cruise control, and blind spot monitoring are included. Buyers can also choose an advanced adaptive cruise control system with hands-free driving. Meanwhile, the 2024 XC90 has similar safety features.
