Signs Your Tires Need Replacing

Eight signs that you need to replace your tires are:

  1. They Are Expired: You might not know it, but just like produce at the grocery store, your tires have an expiration date. Most tires expire six years after their manufacturer date, and you can find the expiration date on the sidewall of each tire.
  2. The Steel/Fabric Cords Are Showing: Kevlar, cotton, or synthetic fabric strands help maintain the shape and reinforcement of your tires, and steel cords also help with the shape and rigidity. If it’s gotten to the point that you can see the strands, you need to schedule a replacement ASAP.
  3. Visible Cracks: Rubber dries out as your tires age, and cracks begin to pop out as a result. If the cracks have gotten wider and the rubber bits are peeling off, your tire should be replaced soon.
  4. Cuts or Bulges: While scratches and minor chips are no big deal, a cut or a bulge is. Bulges occur when air gets trapped between the inner and outer rubber layers, and cuts can occur from road debris.
  5. Uneven Tread Wear: If your tires aren’t properly aligned, the tread will wear unevenly, causing them to become less effective at gripping the road.
  6. Worn Down Thread: One of the most obvious indicators that your vehicle needs new tires is if the tread is worn down. If the tire tread is below 2/32nds, you need to replace them.
  7. Poorly-Placed Puncture: Most puncture marks on your tires can be replaced with a plug patch, but if there’s a puncture near the shoulder or in the side wall, it cannot be safely patched up. If your tire has punctures more than ¼-inch in diameter, it’s recommended to replace it.
  8. Loss of Grip:If you feel like you’re slipping or sliding on your tires, they might not have a good grip. You want to feel confident when driving, and a key factor to that is a set of tires that makes you feel safe.
